Meet Willemiena Matjan. A petite woman, at the tender age of 12 she relocated to the Wieldraai restaurant as a companion for their daughter. Many years later she moved to Merino in the Warm Bokkeveld, where she learnt to read and write as an adult.
In the portrait she is sitting in front of the fireplace in the kitchen with its brick floor
She and her husband lived on Roggevlei farm until he fell ill, after which they moved to town to live with children.
She is still enjoying her family at her advanced age.
